First York bus company has provided York City Knights with a "marvellous Christmas present" by offering free buses for fans travelling to home games next season.

The free bus service taking supporters to and from different areas of the city to matches at Huntington Stadium was piloted at the start of last season and proved popular throughout the Knights' inaugural campaign.

And First York has now shown its backing for the club by offering to continue the service free of charge for the entire 2004 campaign, starting with the Rich Hayes Testimonial match at home to Hull KR on Sunday.

Marketing officer Helen Chapman had the idea to offer the company's support in this way. "We felt that lots of companies in the city were supporting the Knights and that we should do the same," she explained.

"It is also a way of doing something for the community. Commercial manager Peter Edwards and the MD, Jonathan May, were both enthusiastic about the idea and gave it the go-ahead."

Knights chairman Roger Dixon said: "We are delighted First York should want to help the Knights in this way and are most grateful to the company for this generous offer which has come as a marvellous Christmas present to the club.

"We know how much the complimentary bus service was appreciated by the fans - not only Knights' supporters but also our guests from visiting clubs - during our maiden season.

"It is wonderful news that we are able to provide the service again for the 2004 season.

"The company's interest in and support for the Knights is valued greatly by all those involved with the club in whatever way."

As reported by the Press, the free buses this Sunday will run from:

Thanet Road Baths (Edmund Wilson) 2pm, picking up at Stonebow Job Centre at 2.15pm;

Burton Stone Lane (Corner House) 2pm then Lowther Street (Shops) 2.15pm;

To wait at York Railway Station forecourt from 2pm to meet potential trains from Hull, departing 2.20pm to stadium.

All buses will depart Huntington Stadium at 5pm prompt.
