Mark Viduka believes the Elland Road fans can play a major part in Leeds United's battle to avoid relegation.

It has been a good 48 hours for United with a 4-1 victory over Wolves being enough to lift Eddie Gray's men off the foot of the table. Defeats for close rivals Portsmouth, Everton and Manchester City last night also raised hopes of United escaping the drop.

Leicester City, Portsmouth, Everton and Manchester City all have to visit Elland Road before the end of the season and Viduka believes the United fans have a big part to play.

He said: "The fans have been terrific this season. Obviously it is difficult for them watching the team lose matches, but they realise there is really no choice because unless we are all pulling in the same direction they will be watching First Division football next season.

"Hopefully we can repay that support by plugging away and surviving in the Premiership."

Meanwhile, Viduka next week faces an energy-sapping trip to Venezuela after being called up for Australia's friendly in Caracas. The Socceroos kick off against Venezuela at 4pm (British Time) on Wednesday February 18 and with Leeds facing Manchester United at 12.30pm the following Saturday it means Viduka could struggle to return in time.

Ten English-based players have been selected and Aussie coach Farina has demanded that all senior players attend the fixture.
