CCTV cameras are to be installed in some shops, homes and areas in York to deter and help catch thieves ('Secret cameras spy on burglars', February 10).

We have CCTV in the city centre, shops and banks, traffic wardens with cameras and community police with camcorders. Have the authorities gone snap happy?

To catch the thieves, the photo may be proof, but what about the punishment? Most culprits are only fined. Will this stop them? I think not.

So what next, signs saying, "CCTV cameras in action, smile?"

...MR Ball says he would rather the police concentrated on catching muggers and drug dealers than "hassling" cyclists, (Letters, February 11).

Am I being cynical in saying I want the police to do both? The only time I have seen a drug deal taking place was 188 miles away at King's Cross Station.

Mr Ball says he does not condone cycling on the pavement. I saw four cyclists riding on the pavement in the short journey from my house to Monk's Cross at 10 o'clock one Sunday morning in an area where cycle lanes are provided, but usually ignored.

Is it too much trouble to cross the road and use the cycle path when you can get away with riding on the pavement?
