YORK indoor bowls team bowed out of the Egham Trophy at the quarter-final stage when they were well beaten by Lincoln 95-57.

Only one York rink won - Iain Boyle, Frank Turner, Carol Instone and Brenda Love. They led 21-9 after three ends and won 23-16.

It was a sorry show elsewhere. Paul Mooring, Amy Monkhouse, Graham Instone and Trish Stevens turned a 6-0 deficit into a 7-6 lead but eventually lost 19-12.

At Lincoln, David Stroughair, Mick Parker, Melanie Brooke and Joyce Chelin were in contention 7-6 after ten ends but collapsed to a 31-9 defeat.

Michael Bruce, Graham Brooke, Michelle Mooring and Dot Kennelly were swept aside by England international Billy Jackson's team 29-13.

It was the second quarter-final disappointment in two weeks for the York club after the ladies defeat in the Yetton Trophy at the hands of South Shields, but they still have hope with their Vivienne Trophy team, who meet Colchester in the semi-finals.

York need to beat Yorkshire League leaders Featherstone at least 16-2 on points on Saturday in order to retain the title.

They picked up only 14 points from their 86-75 victory over Metrodome, leaving them a stiff task ahead.

There were easy wins at home against Metrodome even though both rinks dropped shots late on.

David Stroughair, Michael Bruce, Tex Stevens and Dudley Williams won 27-14 after being 22-3 ahead, and Iain and Ted Boyle, Paul Humphries and Josh Cahill won 26-2.

At Barnsley, Paul Mooring, Graham Brooke, Mal Harrison and Philip Scott took the lead on the fifth end and won 22-16.

The other quartet struggled, probably due to last minute changes which saw Charlie Bateman drafted in to skip, with Frank Turner, Mick Parker and Phil Parsons, and they lost 24-11.

Second division leaders New Earswick's chances of promotion hang in the balance after they finished their season with an 84-79 defeat against Hornsea.

Both Hornsea and Ryedale have games in hand, so Earswick's stay at the top is under threat.

Paul Dawson, Barry Johnson, Ralph Tiplady and Dennis Ellis won 19-18 after scoring a three on the last end, though Gary Bunce, Dave Birch, Rob Domville and Ron Newton lost 12 shots over the last five ends and went down 27-19.

Ray Clark, Ken Harrison, Mick Stannard and Steve Long managed to hold on for a 23-18 victory at Hornsea, while Bill Waldie, Brian Gray, Bill Chittock and John Rowan went down 21-18.

There was better news for New Earswick in the Hebden Trophy as they qualified for the final, winning their group with a game to spare after claiming maximum points from their 98-62 victory over Ryedale.

Barry Harrison, Alan Spencer, Dave Hutchinson and Joe Cooper scored nine shots from the last four ends to win 25-15.

The other home rink of Mal Beavers, Jim Bone, Albert Wilson and Dave Imeson won their last four ends to overturn a 22-19 deficit into a 27-22 win.

Bob Howland, Graheme Watson, David Pearson and Ron Wood won 23-9 at Ryedale, while Ken Plowman, Dave Sykes, Gordon Storey and Ray Bowman scored a seven on the 14th end on their way to a 23-16 win.

Key away wins swing it as New Earswick beat leaders

New Earswick ladies indoor bowls team beat North Eastern League leaders Hornsea 72-68, picking up six points thanks to the two away rinks winning.

Jeanette Coulson, Kath Sykes, Margaret Pearson and Ann Thompson won the last three ends to win 19-14.

Peg Walker, Diane Hardy, June Barker and Margaret Blows scored a single on the last end to seal a 16-14 victory just as the home side were threatening to pinch the game.

At home, Brenda Keller, Barbara Brigham, Dot Kay and Pat Lancaster were edged out 20-19 at home.

Lys Jerrum, Maureen Cooper, Audrey Shingles and Kath Hardcastle went into their last end requiring a two with the score standing at 19-18 but dropped a single.

Thanks to New Earswick's win, York went top after they beat North Cave 10-0 on points with a magnificent 108-76 victory.

Pat Bracken, Maureen Robinson, Sue Jeffrey and Liz Worling had to fend off a late surge after they let a 23-8 lead slip to 23-19 but held their nerve to win 26-21.

The other home quartet of Margaret Smith, Irene Paylor, Pat Ellis and Pat Lofthouse let a healthy lead slip from 13-4 to 13-13. But they won six of the next seven ends, to romp home 30-16.

Clarice Johnston, Doreen Arnett, Jean Williams and Ann Sharpley stormed ahead 9-0 at North Cave after only four ends on their way to a 28-20 victory.

Brenda Martin, Joyce Gee, Mavis Puckering and Olive Dalby turned their game round with a five, followed by a four, to go from 13-9 down to 18-13 in front, which gave them the push they needed as they went on to win 24-19.
