The River Ure match record was smashed in an historic contest fished between Hutton Beck and Barn Island on Sunday.

Steve Newns (KL Tackle) won the 76-peg open event with a staggering 125lb 12oz.

Drawn to fish from above the famous Leathams run-off ,he cast a waggler to the far-side willows and loose fed bronze maggot.

After taking a chub third run down he never looked back and was still adding to his record haul as the whistle sounded.

His bulging net contained 86 chub at the all-out, with most fish around 1lb.

Steve Aldridge (Guisley Angling) was the best of the chasing pack, with 27lb 9oz from peg 209 above North Bridge. Waggler and maggot helped him land 19 chub in the opening half of the contest.

Others: Steve Beckwith (Leeds Angling Centre) 27-6-0; Dave Robson (Kippax Tackle Box) 13-10-0; Neil Proctor (Ripon) 11-2-0; Don McAllister (Bentley Angling Centre) 8-14-0

The Ouse between Hunters Lodge and Linton was low and clear for Saturday's open match which, coupled with a sub-zero temperature, made for a dire 53-entry final match in the series.

Gordon Smith (Worksop) won from peg 219 on the bungalows. Casting a groundbait feeder to the bottom his peg he netted a trio of slabs to 7lb for his winning 19lb 8oz.

At the peg below, Andy Hampson (Hirst Tackle) managed only one fish from the famed 220 peg, but his 6lb 2oz was still more than the rest of the match put together.

Daryll Taylor (Daiwa Goldthorpe), making a rare venture from the frozen commercial circuit, was third with a single perch of 1lb 8oz

Others: Trevor Hewitt (Hirst Tackle) 0-4-0; Martyn Highe (Hirst Tackle) and Richard Carette (Waterline Wibsey) both 0-3-0

League final positions: Phil Austin (Barlby Village Stores) 48 points; Martyn Highe (Hirst Tackle) 45; Peter Hyde (Marsh Tackle) 44.

There were only a dozen catchers in Sunday's 56-peg open match on a dire Ouse between Hunters Lodge and Linton.

The same two pegs dominated proceedings again, with 220 getting the better of its upstream rival from the previous day.

Norman Thewliss (Hirst Tackle) led with five bream taken on a groundbait and caster feeder and red worm. The best fish in his winning 30lb 9oz was 7lb.

At the peg above, Roy Knox (Airborough) used the same tactics for a quartet of proper slabs and a smaller bream of around 3lb for his 26lb 2oz.

Paul Bennett (Waterline Wibsey) was on noted chub peg 213, where he managed one fish on a far-bank caster feeder. His chublet was hardly a net-buster at just 15oz.

Others: Steve Lowther (Middy Dons) 0-9-8; Tony Hewson (Armley Angling) 0-3-0; Roger Ellis (Marsh Tackle) 0-2-8.

One of the few Stillwater matches to beat the big-freeze was at the Oaks, where 76 fished the Sunday open match on Cedar.

Jamie Clay (Headingley Anglers) topped some reasonable weights considering the Arctic conditions, with 24lb 5oz Drawn to fihs at peg 23 he targeted the aerator with maggot and pellets for small carp to 2lb.

Terry Kenny (Oaks) followed up his second placing the prtevious week with another, taking 21lb 9oz of pasty carp at peg 43. Pole and pellet down the track at 8 metres was his successful ploy.

Others: Chris Hargreaves (Bob.Co) 20-5-0; Chris Hall (Oaks) 15-9-0; Tim Moran (Waterline Wibsey) 14-3-0; John Kenning (Daylight Baits) 13-6-0.
