YORK shoppers are to get the chance to try out self-service checkouts, store bosses have announced.

Four of the checkouts will be unveiled at the Tesco Extra store in Clifton Moor on Monday, March 22, giving customers the chance to scan and pay for their own shopping using cash or cards.

Tesco says the checkouts have been introduced following customer demand, and research from previous trials found 98 per cent of those who use them for the first time said they would use it again because of their speed, convenience and ease of use.

The store manager at Tesco Extra, John McAlpine, said: "Lunchtime is always a very busy period. Many people simply want to buy a sandwich, a drink and a few bits and pieces in their lunch hour. Now they can use the self-serve checkouts quickly and easily and get back to work on time.

"You simply scan your shopping, pay for it, put it in a bag and walk away. It's great fun. Children can help their parents and everyone can have a go at being a shopkeeper. Should customers require any assistance using the self-service checkouts for the first time, our staff are always on hand to help."

Customers who choose to use the new checkouts, which are suitable for both baskets and trolleys, will be guided by simple instructions on a screen and voice prompts, with Tesco staff always on hand to assist customers when required.

Shoppers will still be able to claim Tesco Clubcard points and use money off coupons. The new system will not replace traditional checkouts or checkout assistants.
