Winger Andy Gabel scored a hat-trick of tries in the space of 14 minutes as Selby won 36-12 in a friendly match against Morley at Sandhill Lane.

Morley fielded mostly a second string side, but with six first XV substitutes.

Selby, with full back Hamish Burns and centre Shaun Austerfield both late call-offs, brought Paul Scott into the full back berth and new boy Chris McDonald took over at stand-off, with Martin Bramley switching to centre.

Selby took the lead in the 13th minute when scrum-half Mathew Smith jinked round the blind side after a rolling maul to touch down near the posts. Winger Phil Raffen kicked the conversion.

In the process of scoring Smith had been tackled late and Selby were awarded a penalty straight from the kick off.

In the 16th minute Gabel burst through on the blind side to touch down and Raffen converted.

Four minutes later a miss pass by Smith sailed out to Gabel on the blind side wing and he sprinted in for the touch down. Raffen kicked the conversion from near the touchline.

In the 30th minute Gabel won a race for the touch down and completing his hat-trick of tries after good work by Andy Bennett and an astute kick through Morley's defence by centre Martin Bramley. Raffen narrowly missed the conversion.

Six minutes later Selby scored their fifth try when, after a rolling maul, Smith released to number 8 Tony Godfrey who crashed over on the blind side for an unconverted try.

Stand-off Chris McDonald was yellow carded for throwing a retaliatory punch in the 47th minute.

Morley reduced their arrears with a try when winger Simon Bradshaw collected the ball, which had been kicked over the Selby defence, to touch down near the posts. Stand-off Ed Hutchinson kicked the conversion.

When McDonald returned Selby applied pressure and, after a successful five-metre scrum, centre Andy Bennett crashed over for an unconverted try.

Morley brought on their first team replacements and Selby came under pressure. Morley flanker Andy Watkins touched down in the 78th minute for an unconverted try.
