York made a foray into the future with a friendly against Yorkshire One side Goole, where the visitors won 7-5.

Six second-team players were promoted to the senior ranks to give coach Paul Matthews a chance to see them in action as he starts his building job for next season.

The already relegated York side played into the near-gale force wind to go into half-time deadlocked at 0-0 but Goole broke through early in the second to register their first and only try.

Goole's pack and inside backs drove the ball up field, sucking in the York defence before sending the ball wide to score an unconverted try in the corner.

This spurred York into action and midway through the half a good break by Sam Arkle put pressure in Goole and after a number of phases Sean Bass, playing at fly-half threw out a long miss pass to left wing Dave Moss-Blundle, who touched down wide out.

Full-back Tom Copeland kicked a difficult but wind-assisted conversion to give York a vital lead which they never looked like losing.

Matthews said: "The second team players, to their credit displayed some good ball skills, good awareness and were a credit to playing a first team game.

"I'm looking to build for next season in Yorkshire One so it was good to see what the other players in the squad could do."
