ST John's College completed a cup double over York and District Sunday Afternoon League champions Clifton FC in a bruising encounter.

Clifton had won the first division title by three points from the students, who got their revenge when they beat Clifton 3-0 in the League Cup final.

Matters came to a head in the York FA Sunday Afternoon Cup final at Acomb's New Lane ground on Monday night.

The needle encounter exploded in the second half when referee Mike Tyas sent off two Clifton players.

As reported by the Evening Press yesterday, police had to be called when violence transferred to the touchline when fighting broke out between rival supporters.

The game had started at a frantic pace with Clifton's Darren Heels hitting the College bar with goalkeeper Jon King beaten.

Mark Phillips in the Clifton goal then produced two great saves and with two minutes of the half remaining his side took the lead when Paul Bedingham pounced on a mistake by King to slot the ball home.

St John's hit back straight away when Michael Horsefield lobbed in the equaliser.

Clifton went closest to scoring in normal time with Kevin Butler forcing King in to a fine save.

In the second period of extra time two Clifton players were given their marching orders, sparking chaotic scenes.

The match eventually went to a penalty shoot-out which the College won 3-2.

Presentations were made by Dip Patel, of the York FA, who is also secretary of the Sunday Afternoon League.

Forest FC clinched the Sunday Afternoon Division Two title after a 2-1 victory over Cottage Inn.

They only needed a point to secure the title, but two goals by Mike Craven gave Forest the title in their first season together.
