THE only progressive party with a real chance of gaining a seat in Yorkshire and the Humber in the June European elections is the Green Party.

We have elected councillors and growing support across the region.

Nationally, we have had two MEPs for the past five years who are known for their tireless campaigning for the environment and for social justice.

We have a track record of campaigning consistently against the ill-fated war on Iraq and for forward-looking policies on the environment, safe food and supportive local communities.

Above all, we always draw our support from across the community and across the political spectrum. We have a real chance in Yorkshire of electing an MEP who will speak out on progressive issues and put forward alternative solutions. This chance will only be undermined if people who oppose the war on Iraq and are disillusioned with Labour policies use their vote for new parties such as Respect (May 5).

While many of Respect's policies are similar to the Green Party's, their party is less well established and, with its strong SWP (Socialist Workers' Party) involvement, has a far narrower appeal than the Greens.
