ANOTHER motorcyclist has been killed on a North Yorkshire road, bringing the total to four motorcycle deaths this month.

The man, named today as Peter John Overend, 37, of Gilberdyke, East Yorkshire. died after an accident outside Squires Caf Bar, on the B1222 near Sherburn-in-Elmet, last night.

He was riding a black Honda CB900F Hornet motorcycle when the collision occurred. A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said he was involved in a collision with the rear end of a vehicle, which threw him into the path of oncoming traffic.

He said a Fiat Punto and a Volkswagen Golf were the main vehicles involved in the incident, shortly before 5.20pm.

Mr Overend was taken to St James's Hospital in Leeds, but was pronounced dead later.

Police are investigating the accident, and have called for witnesses to contact them on 01904 669884.

The motorcyclist is the sixth biker to be killed on the roads of North Yorkshire this year, and the fourth this month.

On May Bank Holiday Monday a motorcyclist died on the A162 Sherburn bypass after being in collision with a horse and cart.

On the same day a man from West Yorkshire died after a collision with a silver-coloured cattle trailer on an unclassified road between Greenhow and Blubberhouses, near Harrogate.

Two days earlier a 38-year-old Scarborough man died after his motorcycle was involved in a collision with a car on the A171 between Whitby and Scarborough.

Last year a record number of motorcyclists were killed on the roads of North Yorkshire, with 28 fatalities over the 12 months.
