I AM concerned after reading your report, 'Water bills set to soar' (August 5), because I am one the consumers who will be hardest hit.
On a fixed single low income, I already struggle to pay this bill which is not related to how much water I use but based on the rateable value of the house.
As a single occupant I probably use half the water than two people do, but still pay the same amount. Because I use far fewer services as a single occupant I am entitled to a 25 per cent rebate on my council tax bill. This logic should be applied to water bills.
The water company has suggested the Government intends to pursue a policy of water meter installation allowing payment by consumption. However, as a tenant I will not be able to install a meter, let alone afford the installation, without the owner's consent.
I shall be forced to continue to pay double for my water regardless of the amount used. I urge the water companies and the Government to include a 25 per cent rebate for single occupants and suggest all readers in this position petition their local MPs for this.
