DAY 12 in the Big Brother house: Imagine, if you will, that the housemates have been removed, and replaced with bands from the burgeoning Leeds music scene.

The Music are Nadia: the shrieking, ballsy, people's choice; Black Wire are Dan: the aloof, pouting fashionista; 10,000 Things are Kitten: brassy and swaggering; The Cribs are Emma: dippy but likeable; and The Blueskins are Ahmed: the hoary old maniac lurking on the fringes.

And who has taken the place of hyperactive puppy-dog Stuart, the man happiest when raiding the dressing-up box and running around like a lunatic? Why, Kaiser Chiefs of course, the latest fidgety post-punkers on the block, and the subject of much music press salivation.

Last night, the quintet treated Fibbers to a set of off-kilter splendour which largely recalled Devo's quirky synth-punk and the amiable soul-funk of Orange Juice. Ever-playful three-minute bursts of sugar-sweet pop were interspersed with slightly more innovative tracks, peaking with the freewheeling Beta Band charms of stone-cold-classic debut single Oh My God.

Unlike the "I own Forever Changes AND Trout Mask Replica, you know" Liverpool scene, the bands surfacing from the depths of West Yorkshire share little but ambition and imagination; and none have more of either than these eccentric future stars.

After the success of the likes of Franz Ferdinand and The Futureheads, the new wave of New Wave is gaining momentum, and here is the band who can rise to the top of the pile. Lacklustre garage rock, you have been evicted; please leave the Big Brother house.
