FIFTY German musicians will sing in York Minster on Thursday (19th).

The Landesjugendchor Rheinland-Pfalz, one of Germany's most famous choirs, will perform at Evensong at 5pm and in a concert of English cathedral music at 7.30pm.

The choristers, aged 16 to 40, assemble several times a year, always with a distinguished guest conductor, to work on a variety of programmes, ranging from gospel and jazz to great choral works such as the Verdi Requiem.

This year, the British conductor Michael Procter has been invited to devise and direct the programme for the choir's tour of Yorkshire from August 13 to 23.

The musicians are staying and rehearsing at Ampleforth College and will be singing at services and concerts in Ripon Cathedral and Durham Cathedral as well as York Minster.

Procter, who has lived in Germany since 1995, is an authority on sacred music of the Renaissance. He is the director of the Hofkapelle ensemble and was previously conductor of the Renaissance Singers, in London, and founder of the Early Music News newspaper.

Each year he directs the International Academy of Sacred Music at St Mark's, in Venice, and he has published several hundred editions of early music.

His programme with the Landesjugendchor Rheinland-Pfalz will incorporate John Tavener's Mass O Willelme, alongside works by Purcell, Stanford, Walton, Ireland and Naylor.
