CITY of York Council has published a full breakdown of the costs of the city's 2000 floods in a bid to make Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott provide more cash.

It cost the council £1,321,000 to deal with the flooding aftermath, with the council paying £772,000 and receiving £549,000 Government cash.

Costs not eligible for Government funding were £93,000 for revenue loss from closed car parks, £25,000 spent repairing and replacing car park ticket machines and toilets, £172,000 for highways and footpath repairs and £63,000 on cleaning and drying out homes.

Council leader Steve Galloway told the Evening Press yesterday the scheme the Government used to calculate flood payments was outdated and should not have applied to York.

Coun Galloway challenged Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott to make good on his promise to refund the £772,000 which he made during a whistle-stop tour of the city during the 2000 disaster.

He said the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) disagreed with some of the things the council spent its money on including using warm air heaters to dry out flooded homes.

A spokesperson for the ODPM said the council received full payments following the claims they made after the 2000 floods and the claim could not be reopened.
