The four-wheel drive system is fully automatic and standard equipment includes traction control, while an electronic stability programme will be available and every model comes with front, side and curtain airbags.

Longer, wider and higher than the average small SUV, the new five-seater Sportage will be available with a choice of three engines (2.0-litre and 2.7-litre V6 gasoline, or 2.0-litre diesel), two-wheel or four-wheel drive powertrains, five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmissions (with full auto or manual selection) and two trim/equipment levels. Automatic transmission will be optional with the diesel.

The rear seat cushion and backrest has a unique "Fold & Dive" system to create a roomy, square-sided, completely flat cargo area. The passenger seat backrest can fold flat to accommodate extra-long loads and, at the rear, the top-hinged tailgate features a flip-up window (like the Sorento) for added loading versatility.

The spare wheel is carried internally, beneath the cargo area floor, so the gas-strut supported tailgate is easy to operate.

Sportage customer deliveries in Europe are scheduled to start during October and more than 20,000 models will be available for the European market during 2005 including right hand drive UK specification models.

The new Kia Sportage is viewed as a "next generation" vehicle by Kia, providing a sporty and elegant, adaptable and spacious car.

A UK Kia spokesman said: "It will offer Kia customers three modern vehicles in one - with passenger car refinement, ride and handling, SUV exterior, ease of access and four-wheel grip, plus estate-like versatility, people space and cargo space."
