WAYS of tackling the rising debt burden were on the agenda today when York MP Hugh Bayley visited a card protection company offering a service to keep customers in control of their financial affairs.

The CPP Group, which employs almost 900 staff at its Holgate Park site, has launched an advice package called Financial Health to advise individuals before they get into debt.

If customers do get into difficulties, there is also a "financial rehabilitation programme" to find ways to help them get back on their feet.

York MP Hugh Bayley met staff to discuss the issues arising from Britain's debt-led economy and how the service can assist customers in staying in control of their own finances.

Mr Bayley said he knew from speaking to his own constituents that increasing numbers of people were facing problems with debt.

"Credit cards are sometimes a reason, or the reason, for debt getting out of hand, so I congratulate CPP for recognising the problem and helping their customers avoid it," he said.

"Responsible financial management is an increasingly important issue. I welcome this and other initiatives to help prevent people getting into debt."

Financial health manager Shirley Woolham said: "The product was designed because the everyday financial world is growing increasingly complicated and people have to make decisions about debt much earlier, students for example.

"We hope our customers will always be in the best position to manage their finances."

The service, which costs £4.99 per month, can be bought by a bank or credit card company for a customer, or by the individual themselves.

Customers have access to a helpline where they can speak to a money advice professional. It is open between 8am and 8pm each day.

They can also use a members' only advice website and take advantage of £1,000 worth of insurance benefits.

"We call it the equivalent of vehicle breakdown cover," said Ms Woolham. "You never expect to need it ,but you are glad of it when you do."
