APPARENTLY Mr Jeffrey is still trying to recover from the verbal lacerations he received from Mr J H Jessop and Major M G Wilks over his silly remarks about the Duke of Edinburgh's war medals (Letters, August 9).

He tells us - I suspect with a certain amount of pride and, perhaps, regret - that his father could have had medals for his service in the Army Medical Corps in the Second World War.

Amazingly, his father did not claim those medals because he could not be bothered to fill in a long form.

How sad.

My father was always proud of his First World War medals for his service in the Army in France as a private soldier. I don't recall any problems about claiming for those medals.

Nevertheless, if my father had acted as Mr Jeffrey's father did we would have been so embarrassed we would not have wanted even our next-door neighbours to know the facts.

We would certainly not have broadcast the astonishing details in a newspaper as Mr Jeffrey junior has done, nor with such eloquence.

....THERE would be no need for the Duke of Edinburgh to get a demob suit because he continued to serve after the end of the war (Letters, August 9).

However, I received a demob suit at the end of the war, despite serving with the Army until 1987.

The suits were of excellent quality and rank was not a factor. Because medals were not made until after the war ex-service personnel had to apply for them. There was a lot of publicity at the time on how to do this.

Most did but some did not.

Regulars were automatically issued with medals. If Mr Jeffrey applies to The Officer in Charge, The Army Medal Office, Government Buildings, Worcester Road, Droitwich Spa, Worcester WR9 8AU (telephone 01905 772323) giving his father's full name, date of birth, service number, regiment/corps, date of joining first unit, date of transfer/demob or as many of these details as possible he should get the medals.

It can all be found using Google on the Internet. I have helped many obtain their medals and there are organisations such as the British Legion who would help.
