LONG-RANGE hit-man Paul Groves can become York City's unsung hero this season and help midfield partner Darren Dunning realise his full potential.

So claimed City boss Chris Brass in the wake of Groves' opener against Tamworth.

"I remember Paul Groves scoring a left-footed goal like the one he got against Tamworth for Grimsby that stopped me going to Wembley with Burnley and I have reminded him of that," Brass said. "But it was another disciplined performance from him.

"He will go through the season and may not get the plaudits he deserves but he's respected by his peers and myself. His experience helps the youngsters around him.

"It was also the most disciplined performance in a long time from Darren Dunning. He does not have to carry the mantle like he did last season now he's playing alongside Paul.

"He was in there with experience last season but he's playing with a different kind of experience now."

Brass played on the right side of midfield last night after playing at full back and in the centre of defence at Aldershot on Saturday.

He is happy to be the team's utility man but admits that Kevin Donovan will continue to be his first choice on the right flank when he has recovered from injury.

Brass said: "I wanted to stay with 4-4-2 and I know I can do a job there if needed. It's not my ideal position but I know I can get up and down and put balls in.

"The other bonus is Graeme Law had a good game at right back so I know if I'm needed elsewhere we can trust him there.

"But Kevin Donovan will be the natural man to play on the right of midfield. He might have a chance for Saturday and it's pleasing to have somebody of his quality knocking on the door."

City's reserves were kicking off their season at Huddersfield Town later today.
