SQUATTERS who occupied a landmark York pub in protest at unused property in the city today left the building.

Members of the York Peace Collective moved out of the Bonding Warehouse, in Skeldergate, after a number of disturbances.

They took over the riverside venue, which has stood empty since the floods of 2000, last week.

But their project was placed in jeopardy when up to ten people forced their way into the four-storey red brick building, attracted by an all-night party on Saturday.

Gareth Spydaz, a member of the collective, said they no longer have anything to do with the squat after "it got taken over by idiots".

"We have moved away from it, but we sincerely believe we made a point. There are very few buildings in York used for the purpose of the community," he said.

"It doesn't stop. We will continue to look out for other disused buildings."

Members of the York Peace Collective first hit the headlines when they occupied the White Swan Hotel, in Piccadilly, in April 2003 to protest against the "waste" of disused properties in York.

They have since occupied a disused terrace house in Holgate and the empty Gimcrack Hotel, in Fulford Road.
