HOUSEHOLDERS in York awoke to a wet start - but environment chiefs promised heavy rain would not lead to flooding as severe as that seen last week in the city.

Rainfall started shortly before midnight and continued throughout the night, leaving many homeowners feeling uneasy at the prospect of a repeat of last week's difficulties.

A spokeswoman for the Environment Agency said the weather forecast was for showers for the next couple of days, but not for prolonged heavy rain, and that widespread flooding was unlikely.

She said: "We are not expecting the same sort of weather as last week, but showers are predicted until Friday.

"It's a bit hard to predict with the weather we have been having what it's going to be like and there could be some localised flooding, but not as severe as last week."

The rivers Ouse, Foss and Derwent, which were on flood warning last week, were given the all-clear earlier this week.

To report flooding the Environment Agency floodline number is 0845 9881188.
