THIS hits you like a torrent. While fellow Glaswegians Franz Ferdinand are successfully trading on a look created by Talking Heads, Sons And Daughters look even further back to Johnny Cash for inspiration.

The man in black is gone, but the snarling vocal duets of Adele Bethel and Scott Paterson serve his legacy well. To label them as a retro or tribute band would be grossly unfair.

Taking Cash's stripped-down approach, adding a distinctly Scottish folk twist then throwing in as much drama as you can imagine - and they have a new fresh perspective. Sons And Daughters are the equal of 16 Horsepower, the visceral American rabble rousers.

The guitar work is quietly powerful, especially on the opener, Fight. Johnny Cash, the song, is pure and unadulterated and because Love The Cup is just 25 minutes long, there is not a wasted note on this intense debut, first released in America and now launched here. Highly recommended.
