I was as interested to read Mr Booth's remarks (Report law breakers, Letters, August 18), especially his mention of Michael Heseltine's policies.
Could he explain how he can balance the Conservatives' commitment to cutting crime and at the same time increase the number of prisons?
Is he admitting in advance that, rather than cutting crime, the election of a Tory government will result in an increase in crime and therefore the need for greater prison capacity? Or is the plan to cut crime and have grand, oversized under-occupied prisons?
