REMEMBER that contagious Woo Hoo song from Quentin Tarantino's Samurai slasher movie, Kill Bill Vol 1? Tonight (19th) you can hear it bouncing off the walls of Fibbers when The 5,6,7,8's make their York debut.
The cult Japanese surf band are riding the crest of a wave, touring Britain at the time of the Kill Bill Vol 2 release on DVD, on the back of the double career boost of Tarantino exposure and Woo Hoo's use in Carling's ad campaign in the Euro 2004 football tournament.
A typically obscure Tarantino discovery, The 5,6,7,8's are an all-girl combo of guitarist and singer Yoshiko Fujiyama, bass player Yoshiko Yamaguchi and drummer Sachiko Fujiyama, who may have a tenuous command of the English language but delight in a knowledge of good ol' garage trash'n'roll.
The kitsch garage-punk trio meshes feedback and reverb into twisted, stomping lo-fi versions of Sixties' bubblegum pop, Cramps-style Fifties' rockabilly and psychedelic punk, as can be heard on their new album, Teenage Mojo Workout. Released by the Sweet Nothing label on September 20, it will be preceded by a single, I'm Blue, on September 6.
The 5,6,7,8's began a 19-date tour in Newcastle on August 9 and will be on the August 29 bill at the Carling Weekend: Leeds Festival at Braham Park.
Tonight's show has sold out and will open with a support slot by Yumi Yumi.
