LIKE Matthew Flint (Letters, August 23) I too had the misfortune to walk into a crowd of drunken racegoers heading for York Station after the Ebor meeting.

I arrived at York Station at 8.45pm just in time to catch the 9pm bus to Pocklington but, because of re-routing, I couldn't board the bus in the safety of the station forecourt. I had to walk to the War Memorial at Station Rise. I was alone and feeling very vulnerable standing beside a dark and empty First bus on a poorly-lit street.

I suggest the East Yorkshire bus company and City of York Council who thought this one up go and stand at the War Memorial one night where it's badly lit and there is no shelter from the elements and see if they feel safe.
