I WRITE in support of Wilf Taylor and R S Scruton (Letters, August 28 and September 2) on a way of controlling traffic accessing York Races.

Both are correct about the potential for access from the lay by on the A1237 York bypass. With the cooperation of the landowners it would be simple enough to make a temporary road across the fields from the lay by past the six furlong start and possibly join-up with the road behind the entrances to the main stands.

Perhaps the army engineers could be consulted on this, since they have done similar things in York and I feel sure it would be a useful exercise for them.

With such a roadway in place, you could have a one-way system in off the A1237 and back out via Tadcaster Road or Bishopthorpe Road/Simbalk Lane.

As I have said before on other traffic matters, you cannot close roads with bollards and force increasing volumes of traffic down fewer roads, as Mr Evely is trying to do, without causing traffic jams.
