Alex Lloyd reckons you should save your energy for Monday night.

DESCRIBING something as dance music can give little indication of what to expect.

However, Kennedy's new Monday night event - Dance Culture - will be offering up such a spectrum of different DJs that there was no better label.

Dance Culture is a series of events which will explore the many styles of dance, as well as liven up the first night of the week and give local DJs a platform.

There will four different nights, each run by DJs with their own passions, which will take place in the basement bar and rotate on a monthly basis.

Kicking off this Monday will be Widescreen, a night grounded in house but which otherwise has no boundaries - hence the name.

All sub-genres are welcome, so expect to hear anything from progressive, tech, tribal and breaks to electro, techno, funky and trancy. Phew.

This will be the second appearance at Kennedy's for this band of DJs, who have previously run nights at The Fruit Cupboard and Oslo, in Leeds.

On the decks will be residents Gazzman and Fudance, with guests Random Col and Jam-Ez. A mixed bunch, their various inspirations include UNKLE, Gavin Rowe, Mauro Picotto and Sander Klienenburg.

The launch party is free and there will be CD give-aways and drinks promotions for students with an NUS card.

Taking charge of things on September 20 is BLANK, with a breaks and tribal set featuring guest DJ James Cosgrove and residents AY50 and Freesoup, plus a few more free CDs.

September 27 is the turn of trance and techno gurus Rob Stevenson and Owen Clarke to show a different side of dance, with In Motion.

Bringing up the rear on October 4 is something a little more groovy, Slam Dunk da Funk. As the name suggests, funk will be the focus of this Dance Culture event, courtesy of DJ Nick Minardi.

Kennedy's manager Ange Golliger says this foray into a dance-based night is a new venture. "The guys who are doing it have run nights at the university which took off really well. We wanted to create a night that would appeal to students and liven up what is traditionally a quiet night."

Normally I would be urging you to sample the delights of York to the point of excess this weekend. Instead, why not give it a break and save your energy for Monday?
