International honours are awaiting two outstanding Burnholme College students who have won call-ups to their respective national squads.

Lizzie Hope has earned a place in the England women's under-17 football squad, while a record-breaking performance from Year 10 cricketer Andrew Bilton has also singled him out for squad selection.

Year 11 student Hope trains with the squad during the holidays and has also played at Leeds United Ladies, while Bilton recently broke the record for the number of wickets taken at Yorkshire under-15 level and was picked for the final England squad as a result.

Headmaster Tony Gavin said: "Lizzie is excellent academically as well as in sport and is a superb ambassador for Burnholme. We are delighted that she has made it into the England squad. It's every boy in the country's dream to play for England and here we have a girl in Year 11 who has achieved that.

"Andrew is an outstanding local cricketer who has been called up by England, and, although he hasn't played yet, it must be only a matter of time.

"These are both wonderful kids and despite their success, it hasn't gone to their heads at all. They are polite, modest and go about their school business like anyone else.

"I'm going to get them to sign their respective England shirts so we can put them up and show everyone what is possible. The other children in the school now have something to aspire to.

"We have had some excellent athletes before in boxing and netball, but to actually have two at the same time is great."

York Under-11 schoolboy footballers got their pre-season campaign off to a winning start with a comfortable 6-1 defeat of Bishopthorpe U12s.

Jacob Gore opened the scoring against the run of play and Bishopthorpe drew level from a deflected shot. Captain Conor Qualter fed Sam Fowler to restore the York lead before the representative side cut loose in the second half with Charlie Clamp, Sam Byram and Qualter (2) on target.

York complete their pre-season training on Saturday at York Sixth Form College from 9.30 to 10.30am before hosting York City Football Development the following week, kick off 10.30am.
