IF the £30,000 can be found for this year's Christmas lights for York ("Let there be lights", September 15), I hope whoever is responsible will make a better show than last year.

The tiny clear light bulbs seemed to be swamped in lots of "plastic" foliage. The bulbs were lit during the day but could not be seen because of the sunlight - yes the sun does shine in December.

And at night the street lights were so much brighter they drowned out the illuminations.

The only thing that caught my eye was the prominent advertisement for the electric company on both sides of each banner.

I visited Selby and Doncaster last year and if these two places can put on a colourful show - at least they used bigger light bulbs - why can't York?
