I WRITE in regard to the letter by Sandra Howland, "The pain of false allegations" (September 30). I find it quite disturbing that a woman could write this with regard to rape charges. Yes there are lots of rape and sexual assault charges which are hard to prove.

There have been recent cases in crown court which resulted in a "not guilty" verdict. But to say that these women have a "twisted mind" is out of order.

Before a case comes to court, the police conduct a full investigation and the Crown Prosecution Service must believe there is sufficient evidence to support a trial.

Even with DNA evidence these are crimes which are still so hard to prove in court.

Out of a jury of 12, at least ten have to be sure and if any doubt is there, the defendant is then to be found not guilty.

So what about getting justice for those cases where they don't know either way?

All victims are terrified of their ordeal and going to court but statements like those by Ms Howland will discourage people from coming forward. The number of not guilty verdicts also makes you think why bother.

More needs to be done in getting justice and support for all those who are victims of all sex crimes.
