HOW I agree with Ron Atkin, the uncle of the two tearaways who stated that a short, sharp shock will end their reign of terror (October 19).

The problem is, Ron, why should everybody else have to pay for this?

When I was growing up on the estate where teenagers ran amok on Saturday, any short, sharp shock treatment was delivered by my parents for free.

The tone of my dad's voice alone put the fear of God into me, my brother and my sister.

Never once did he ever lay a finger on us, but his behavioural correction treatment worked.

No police, prison, remand centres for us.

The problem with children today must lay firmly at the hands of the parents. How many of these teenage tearaways' parents can say where their children are at any time of day or night?

Surely they should do and if not, be held responsible.

If a dog causes damage or fouls the pavement it is the owner's responsibility. So why can't the parents of youngsters who continually "foul our streets" be made to pay?

I often hear these weak parents say "I can't do a thing with him". Being my father's son I could think of a thing or two, and it would be free. Boredom? That would be the last thing on their minds.

Finally, do you think the sentences meted out to your nephews will work, Ron? No chance, looking at their smug faces, the publicity they have received will just make them feel like small time celebrities within the pack.

Sort the parents out!
