RACHEL Baldwin of Barton-le-Street may be happy with the service she receives from the Post Office (Letters, October 26). I certainly am not.

My wife and I had dental appointments in York on October 20. We walked there in the pouring rain to find that they had been cancelled and were assured a postcard had been sent to us.

This proved to be correct - the postcard, correctly addressed and post-coded, with a first class stamp arrived on the Friday. Four days to get across York.

Some years ago I registered not to receive unsolicited junk mail and it has stopped almost completely, except for the unwanted leaflets put through every letter-box by the postman.

I complained to the head postmaster at York about this and he assured me this would be stopped. Two more came today; if the post office concentrated on delivering first class letters on time instead of unwanted junk mail, they would do everyone a service.

I telephoned the postal sorting office about this delay and left a message on their answering machine, but no response.
