A COLLECTION of downbeat Catholic hymns may not seem like an obvious career move.

But then, American Beth Nielson Chapman is not a typical female singer songwriter. Her albums have shown a refreshing diversity, and she has found a place in many British hearts as a result (evidenced with her well received show in York last month).

The subject matter for this beautiful set is rather mystifying to non-Catholics, but what counts are the melodies and choral arrangements which soothe and soar.

Relying almost entirely on vocal power, Chapman's clear, powerful diction is in its element. Adoramus Te, a hymn associated with St Francis, is the best example, elevated far beyond relaxation music.

Every home will most certainly not own a copy of this, but it nevertheless makes for quietly uplifting listening.
