MAZDA has launched an uprated range of its B-Series pick-up trucks.

The B-Series 4x4 double cab Barracuda, available from October, carries a price tag of £16,000, and replaces the RAP Cab 4-Action and the Double Cab 4-Action and 4-Style models.

Barracuda models have a new exterior with tubular side steps, exterior chrome mirror covers and chrome rear bumper, and will be available in a selection of three colours: Pacific blue mica, black mica or titanium grey metallic.

All Barracuda models will feature a CD-radio stereo system complete with MP3 compatibility, luxury floor mats and a clever new rear console that integrates a triple cup holder, and there is the option of a leather interior for another £1,000. The Barracuda rides on 15-inch alloy wheels.

There are three commercial vehicles in the Mazda B-Series line-up: the entry-level 4x2 single cab, the 4x4 single cab and the 4x4 double cab. These models have also undergone changes, including the use of a darker grey cloth seat trim.

Other introductions include seat-back pockets, a rear console as on the Barracuda and a striking new silver and white instrumentation panel.

The B-Series provides a rugged vehicle that can carry five adults as well as a wide variety of cargo.

The vehicles are powered by a choice of two engines: either the naturally aspirated 2.5-litre diesel which develops 84ps at 4,000rpm with 195Nm of torque at 2,000rpm or the turbo diesel 2.5-litre engine, developing 109ps at 3,500rpm with 266Nm of torque at 2,000rpm. The engines are combined with a five-speed manual transmission, in either 2WD or 4WD versions (depending on model) with gear ratios set to provide a combination of low gear pulling power, and high gear agility and speed.

All models come with driver and passenger airbags and all 4x4 models have a rear limited slip differential that distributes torque between the rear wheels for enhanced traction and a safer drive.

An anti-lock braking system is available on the Barracuda model, as is electronic brake-force distribution. Further safety features include luminosity headlights and a strong body structure.
