I HAVE read with great interest the recent reports on the proposed development of a block of flats for the over 55s in Wigginton.

I have nothing against the older generation, I'll be one of them soon enough, but I have to ask, do we really need another such block here?

We already have several complexes in the Haxby and Wigginton area, including Wyre Court, which is only a couple of hundred yards down the road from the new site.

My mother lives nearby. When I collect or drop her off by car, I have to park on the main road, and we take our lives in our hands. The constant stream of traffic is horrendous. As well as cars, there are frequent buses, heavy lorries and a lot of farm traffic.

So when the developers say they're only providing 12 parking spaces for the residents' 36 flats, are they trying to say there will be no increase in traffic? I don't think so.

What about visiting relatives, or friends: where are they going to park? The Village, Wigginton, has already had its fair share of serious accidents, some recently.

Don't the powers that be realise something has to be done to reduce the onslaught, not increase it?
