YORK-BASED golf professional Simon Dyson blew his chance of glory in the Portuguese Open with a disastrous third round.

After his course record-breaking 64 in the second round, the Malton and Norton GC man shot a miserable 78 in round three and followed that with 72 in yesterday's final round to finish on 291.

That was 20 shots adrift of Paul Broadhurst, who won the event at Cascais after a nerve-jangling finish.

Broadhurst thought his chance of victory had vanished when he bogeyed the final hole but the group behind also made a spectacular mess of the 18th. Long time leaders Barry Lane and Paul Lawrie also dropped shots at the last - Lane taking nine - and Broadhurst hung on to take the £144,000 first prize and his first European Tour victory since the 1995 French Open.
