THE issues which concern the people of York are the possible doubling in size of the university, the possible development of an aerodrome at Elvington, the siting of the York Eye - and the benefits, or otherwise, of Ascot week.

However, parking charges and the congestion of the city's streets appear to be the biggest worry.

Citizens were extremely wise to reject the idea of a congestion charge. Better to pay high parking charges and even the odd fine than have to face the crippling costs forced on many Londoners by Ken Livingstone, the capital's mayor.

I remind any motorists driving into central London from July 4 that they will face a charge of £8 - and a fine of £50 if it is not paid on the first day. This, despite the fact that when Livingstone introduced the charge, he promised it would not be increased from £5.

The citizens of York should continue to reject any form of congestion charging.

They should also reject the idea of a London-style mayor. The person could turn out to be a petty dictator such as Livingstone.
