WHAT gives locksmith John Anthony McGarry the right to totally go to town on a member of the public, breaking his eye socket and ankle in a late-night pub incident ("Clubber broke man's ankle", April 28)?

And just because he suffered a previous traumatic experience, the judge gives him a slap on the wrist more or less.

Where is the deterrent in this? And shouldn't Mr McGarry have shown some restraint in his actions? I think so. This sort of thing is inexcusable and can only lead to an increase in violence.
