THE candidates for the Vale of York constituency representing the three major parties were invited to attend a public meeting hosted by Churches Together in Haxby and Wigginton.

Two of the candidates attended and were able to put their views to electors and answer questions from the floor.

However, one candidate declined the invitation - this was the Conservative Anne McIntosh.

There was no reason offered. It can only be assumed that the reason was either fear, lack of interest or arrogance, none of which lend themselves well to a prospective public servant operating in a democracy.

She ought to be ashamed of herself, and so should the Conservative Party for failing to insist that candidates actively engage with the electorate.
