AUGER played hard jazz/pop - ask your gran about it - before switching to R&B. Steam Packet and Trinity Bands were big on London's 60s jazz scene.
His 1968 smash This Wheel's On Fire with the boyishly-cropped Julie Driscoll catapulted him to national fame and had the kiss of life when the Ad-Fab team used it for their TV series.
Auger's Freedom Jazz Dance and Happiness Is Just Around The Bend seem tame now, but in the early days of Acid Jazz - ask your granddad, if he's still compos mentis - were fresh and weird, man. Seventeen of Auger's best are still worth a listen if only for the diverse musical influences.
