JIM Jeffries has come a long way since his first comedy spot in Sydney at the age of 17. On Sunday, the Western Australian ends up in York at The Other Side Comedy Club.

Jeffries is a celebrity in his home city of Perth. "But then even local newsreaders are celebrities in Perth," he says.

Other Side master of ceremonies Dan Atkinson fills in the career details: "In the UK Jim has quickly made his mark, appearing on The Stand Up Show and Channel 4's The Last Chancers. He's in demand as a headliner at clubs throughout the country, although Nottingham is the only city where he's been knocked out by an audience member. So far," he says.

Sunday's 8pm bill accommodates Dominic Frisby and Sarah Millican too. "Dominic has made his name with a multitude of silly acts and characters: it-guy Simon La Fontaine, farm hand Morris the Morris Dancer, aristocratic twit The Upper-Class Rapper and daft German Ludwig the Bavarian," Dan says.

Frisby contributes regularly to BBC4's Loose Ends, notably with a residency of election broadcasts last month. He has a local connection too, being a cousin of BBC newsreader Claire Frisby.

Until September last year Sarah Millican's wit came from the mouths of others. "One open spot later and she began her rapid ascent to become one of the North East's hottest comics. She hates the term 'comedienne, so don't use it," says Dan.

"While new to the circuit, Sarah has established herself with well-written material and a gentle delivery which disguises her cutting observations on life, love and moving back in with your parents."

Her first play will be staged at The Customs House in South Shields in September.
