THERE'LL be dancing in the streets in York as part of the city's fifth annual dance week.

From Saturday, the city will be putting on its dancing shoes as the dance extravaganza kicks off.

Organised by the council's arts and culture service, the event showcases all forms of dance from professional, youth groups and would-be dancers.

New for this year are Bollywood Fever, which gives local dancers the opportunity to perform on stage alongside professional dancers and Pulse - a showcase of contemporary choreography from York and Yorkshire.

Dancing In The Streets is an innovative interactive lighting installation, which uses the movements of the audience to create a light sculpture.

The installation will be set up next to Caf Nero, in Davygate, and will be switched on at dusk throughout the week, running until midnight.

Next Sunday, a Day of Dance workshops will be held to give adults the opportunity to try out new dance styles.

They will take place at the dance studios at York St John's College from 10am to 4.15pm and can be booked by telephone on 01904 554666 or email: dance@york.gov.uk.

Bringing Dance Week to a close on Saturday, June 25 will be the Open Showcase in St Sampson's Square, from 11am to 6pm.

Salsa dancing will get the pulse racing at Orgasmic Caf next Monday, and Bollywood Fever a week on Friday will see children as young as eight taking part.

Although they had no previous experience of the Bollywood style of dance, they have brought their enthusiasm and energy to the stage along with a variety of dance experiences and skills.
