I WISH the city council good luck in its efforts to stop people dropping gum in the streets and issuing £50 fines, but I fear it will be a wasted effort.
The litter law introduced last year mentioned chewing gum, cigarette ends, bottles, papers etc, all classed as litter. Did it make any difference? No!
Going around Acomb I see hundreds of cigarette ends, especially at bus shelter stops.
The one at the top of Green Lane is an absolute disgrace at times. All the laws seem to be broken all the time.
People are still allowing their dogs to foul the pavements (maybe not quite so much as they used to). Cycles are still ridden on the pavements. Cars are still parked on grass verges.
From my window I see a car parked there most of the time and when it is in use it is driven over the grass verge and footpath until it reaches the main roads. No one in authority is ever there at these times so how can laws be upheld?
