ANGELS were seen floating down the river at York this week.

They were among the 142 members of the Yorkshire Association of Business Angels (YABA) celebrating the organisation's tenth anniversary with a dinner cruise on the Ouse.

YABA provides a forum for private business investors, or angels, to network and collaborate and also provides "business opportunity meetings" where investment hungry ventures can make their pitch.

Over the past five years, YABA members have invested more than £1.5 million in the region's businesses directly through business opportunity meetings plus another £3 million in ventures outside the YABA process.

More than 200 full time jobs have been created as a result.

One of the founders was David March, now YABA's treasurer.

He said: "The original concept was to provide a forum for business angels to network with one another and share experiences. We've now grown beyond that, although our ethos remains the same - that of formalising and professionalizing equity investment by individuals into private companies."
