PIKE Hills golfer Adrian Lount has won his second Eagle Golf-Yorkshire Order of Merit event.

Lount, 21, fired an eight-under par 134 to triumph by one shot at the 36-hole Bingley St Ives Scratch Salver competition.

The Copmanthorpe plumber's success followed his victory in the Cleveland Salver last year when he finished 13th in the Merit standings.

Lount's chances of bettering that performance in 2005 could be restricted by work commitments but he has also enjoyed fourth and 11th-place finishes in other events this year.

The York Union golfer shot a 68 and 66 to clinch victory and said: "I was consistent over both rounds. I knew I was joint leader after the first round and then I went round and performed well again. It was very pleasing to win, especially as the field was a good one."

Lount, who has been a member at Pike Hills for eight years and first played in the Yorkshire Order of Merit in 2002, is now a scratch golfer but has no plans to turn professional.

He said: "I don't want to. I like playing amateur golf and get more enjoyment out of it. I don't think I'm good enough to turn professional at the moment."

Lount is also part of the Pike Hills Golf Club team that have gained promotion to the Yorkshire League's first division and is hoping to help the Askham Bryan-based club succeed in the annual county tournament at Selby on August 17.

KEEPING up with the Jones girl is a major challenge after The Oaks GC's Lysa Jones was crowned the national Glenmuir Women's Club Professional Champion.

Jones prevailed in a four-hole play-off to beat her opponent Adrienne Engleman from Cambridge at Woodhall Spa. Both had headed the top-class field after two rounds on 149, Jones carding 78 71 and Engleman 74 and 75 to force the play-off.

The rivals were still deadlocked after the first three extra holes, though on the third Jones had to twice drag herself out of trouble, most notably with a superb greenside bunker shot.

But on the fourth The Oaks' lady professional putted to within a foot of the hole leaving Engleman a tricky nine-footer which she missed. Jones' reward for winning the title was a weighty silver salver and a winner's cheque of £1,000.

YORK Union secured an excellent 19-17 win over Bradford in a close Yorkshire Inter-District contest at Forest Park.

Forest of Galtres youngster Nick Marchant, the York Union junior champion, won his singles match 2&1 to clinch victory as the home team recovered from trailing 7-5 after the morning foursomes.

Martin Brown (Pike Hills), Alistair Smith (Heworth) and Chris Watson (Scarthingwell) all won both their foursomes and single matches.

NEWCOMER Ed Blogg stole the show in her first appearance in the Pike Hills GC Ladies' Championship.

The one-time member of both Easingwold and Heworth clubs defied blistering temperatures to win the title held over 36 gruelling holes.

Meanwhile, there was a toast raised to Paul Brayshaw, a member of the club's bar staff. He traded bar chores for par wars to win the RNLI Spoon competition.

JUDY Jones edged home on count-back ahead of Anne Wood to win Fulford GC's annual Melville Cup with a three-under-par net 71. Elizabeth Burns and Beryl Harding were each a stroke further behind. Jones also had the best gross score of 85 in a rain-hit competition.

SUPERMAC reigned supreme at Forest Park GC, where David McCarthy won the club championship in fine style. He posted a gross 153 after rounds of 79 and 74 to win ahead of Craig Train 155 (77 78) and Kieran Issitt, third on 156 (76 78).

FORMER European PGA Tour caddie Rob Thornton partnered ex-European boxing champion Henry Wharton and guests to victory in Fulford's Invitation Day on count-back with 90 points.
