A BIG-hearted teenager is in line for a York Community Pride award, for her dedicated work raising money for a good cause.

Clare Dixon, 18, has been nominated for Charity Fundraiser Of The Year in the awards, run by the Evening Press and City of York Council.

The youngster, from Nether Poppleton, has already organised two successful charity events and has now organised a further five. Proceeds are split between Cancer Research and the Poppleton Community Centre.

Last December, she organised a concert by the York Concert Band, and she has now arranged a ceilidh, to be held tomorrow.

Clare was nominated by her mum's friend, Ruth Roberts, who wrote: "I think it is fantastic that a student of 18, having organised a couple of very successful events at Poppleton Community Centre for Cancer Research, has decided to organise five more over the summer months.

"If the super concert by the York Concert Band she organised is a sample of her organisational skills, then we can look forward to some very enjoyable events."

Clare said: "It all started off as I wanted to do a skydive for my 18th birthday last summer. I was looking into them and you can get cheaper ones if you do it for charity."

A friend of Clare's mum died of cancer last year, and she knew other people in her village affected by the illness, so she decided to raise money for Cancer Research.

The initial concert raised £200, and Clare now hopes to add to that.

She said: "It would be nice to know that people are getting help, and the money we raise can go to some good, and we can get closer to funding more treatment."

Clare said: "It's nice to know people appreciate what you are doing, and that you are not just doing it for nothing. It would mean a lot to me if I was to win the award, and it would just be nice to know that I have done some good."

Saturday's ceilidh will be followed by a quiz night on April 21, a concert by the York Light Orchestra on May 13, a kids' disco on June 24 and a treasure hunt on July 9.
