JON Boden takes time out from establishing himself as one of the pioneering interpreters of traditional English song (with award-winning acts Spiers & Boden and Bellowhead) to make this eloquent album of distorted love songs.
Fusing his acoustic sensibilities with raw, driving electric guitar and a touch of electronica, the result is a startlingly original, highly textured soundscape inspired by the songs of Kate Bush, Nick Drake and Tom Waits.
He opens with Get A Little Something, where an avaricious wanderer is offered three tickets to salvation (love, the devil, religion) and rejects all three, only to meet a scythe-wielding stranger in the fourth verse.
Lemany is inspired by the tradition of love lyrics concerning the moment of awakening, while True Love, a simple love song, counterbalances the cynicism elsewhere.
