The River Foss is the second and smaller of the two rivers that meet in York.
The Foss, like the Ouse which it joins just below Skeldergate Bridge, has played an important part in the city's history.
Before drainage work, the Foss formed a massive pond (The King's Fishpool) and marsh which not only provided fish for the city's markets but served as part of the defences.
There is no wall between Layerthorpe Postern and the Red Tower as the marsh was virtually impassable.
