While it seems correspondents to The Press seem to think that York’s busy roads can operate safely without traffic lights, I cannot agree.
Last Wednesday morning I had to travel through the Blossom Street/ Micklegate junction on my bike just before 8am.
The lack of lights produced an extremely dangerous situation for cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians. What it was, was a free-for-all.
Traffic lights are needed. I ensured that their failure was reported immediately and asked two police officers I met in Coppergate to go and assist with the situation.
The Blossom Street/Micklegate/Queen Street junction is perhaps one of the worst for traffic in York and it has to be remembered that children going to three secondary schools travel and many hundreds of workers travel through this area, so safety must come first.
