Since the passing of the recent long “deep freeze”, the many repairs, relaying of surfaces to pavements, parking areas and creating new parking spaces, with the tarred mixture giving a smooth surface, have been resumed, which looks fine and tidy.
However, the recent heavy downpours of rain, often during the night, have produced a new phenomenon. These are lagoons of rainwater inches deep, across large areas of these new surfaces, which last for several hours.
A few examples are the newly laid approach road and the car park at the Energise Leisure Centre, a new parking space in Cornlands Road outside the flats close to York High School and the newly laid pavement outside The Priory Medical Centre.
It is probable that there are many similar “damp” spots across the city. Surely there is enough technology and knowledge to enable these surfaces to be tailored to run off towards the nearest drain or gutter?
